the bright side of the cold weather

This morning as I was driving to work, I heard a 'beep' noise. My first reaction "oh oh i knew i should have taken my car in for its inspection last weekend" (worried as my inspection is over 1000 miles overdue)... a second later "wait i've heard this before.. omg! it's freakin freezing outside"....yeap this is the noise my car makes when the temperature goes below 37 degrees fahrenheit (~3 degrees celcius), and today marked its first appearance for this season.  A look at the dashboard... 32 degrees... eekh!

Let's just say I was less than ecstatic about this awesome freezing weather all day- that is until I stumbled upon a couple of pics I took while at Whistler last year and now I have a little countdown - 23 days till ski season starts at Whistler Blackcomb! woohoo ( I even bought some toe warmers and hand warmers today )... may this season be filled with fresh powder and some icy runs (yes I actually like them both :) ), some awesome jumps and sunny weather on the slopes and no injuries.

    scariest tech of 2006

Read this on fortune - entertaining... Peter Lewis' Horrible Halloween picks for the ghastliest gizmos, scariest software and most terrifying technologies of the year, so far.

    My favorite ones
"It's slower than a trip to Blockbuster, more expensive than buying the physical DVD, absurdly restrictive on how the consumer uses the movie he or she pays for, delivers lower resolution than a DVD, and requires running a cable from the PC to the TV if you want to watch the movie on something larger than a PC monitor."

And what delirium prompted the name "Unbox"? It's sort of like undead.

You can spend $50 today for a progressive-scan standard DVD player, and find thousands of DVD discs at Blockbuster or Netflix that will play on it. Or you can spend $500 to $2,000 for a high-definition DVD player - Blu-ray or HD-DVD, one of which might be obsolete in a year or two - and take your pick of a few dozen movies available for that particular hi-def format.
    Just for the name alone.

    :)

    Divide and Conquer

Just read this post about our dual Live and MSN strategy, Caught in the Middle, on Neal's blog - well said. I posted on this topic a few months ago. My favorite quote from Neal's post:

Unfortunately, as any basic strategy book or course will tell you, deciding to do both is really deciding to do neither. Strategy is less about what you decide to do, and more about what you decide not to do. It is, in a word, about focus, and focus is what gets companies out of their strategic jams in the middle of the market.

    On a similiar note:

“I think the branding of Live has been confusing,” said Directions on Microsoft analyst Matt Rosoff. “It seems like end-users who don't particularly follow Microsoft have never heard of Live or confuse it with the next version of Windows, and customers, partners, and advertisers often express puzzlement over the difference between Windows Live, Live (e.g., Live Search), and MSN. The developer strategy for Live still hasn't seemed to gel very well, either.” (link)

Will we get it right eventually? yes, it may be a long bumpy road with a few detours and roundabouts - but we'll get there.

    the Google

So I was driving to work today, forget whether i was listening to Adam Corolla show or Jackie and Bender, and this made me laugh :)

HOST: I’m curious, have you ever googled anybody? Do you use Google?

BUSH: Occasionally. One of the things I’ve used on the Google is to pull up maps. It’s very interesting to see — I’ve forgot the name of the program — but you get the satellite, and you can — like, I kinda like to look at the ranch. It remind me of where I wanna be sometimes.

    Google recommends Live Search?

as pointed out by PC Pro:
Type 'search' into Google, press 'I'm feeling lucky' and you could be in for a big surprise - suddenly, Google is transformed into Windows Live

Yes, Live Search has just released so why is it at the top of google's results despite their PageRank algorithm... well the top results used to be http://search.msn.com which now redirects to http://search.live.com  ... why would anyone search for search from a search engine though!?

    entertaining nonetheless :)
